The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has implemented the Universal Service Provision (USP) project at Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM), providing 410 Wi-Fi access points and a new 4G communications tower. This upgrade is expected to strengthen digital connectivity across the campus, supporting learning, teaching, and training needs based on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). Of the 410 planned Wi-Fi access points, 108 have been operational since June 2025 under Phase 2 of the Public Institution of Higher Learning Wi-Fi Project.
An additional 302 access points are being implemented under Phase 3 and are scheduled for completion on September 23. The new 4G communications tower, currently under development, is expected to be completed in November and will improve communication coverage and the quality of digital services. MCMC Southern Region Senior Director Rizal Abd Malek, representing Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil, recently inspected the project's implementation at UTeM.
The initiative is part of the Communications Ministry's commitment to strengthening digital connectivity at public learning institutions, aligning with current educational needs and rapid technological development. As a technical university, UTeM requires stable, fast, and high-capacity internet access to support the use of smart laboratories, cloud-based engineering software, and digital simulations. The upgrade will create a more conducive learning environment, enabling students and educators to utilize digital technology more effectively in the teaching and learning process.
Improved digital connectivity at educational institutions will facilitate access to learning resources and help equip students with digital skills and experience relevant to industry requirements. The digital infrastructure upgrade at UTeM is expected to strengthen the country's TVET ecosystem, enhance graduates' readiness to adapt to technological changes, and support the development of digital and technical talent needed for future economic growth. The project's completion is scheduled for later this year, with the new 4G communications tower expected to be finished in November.
With over 12,000 students set to benefit from the upgraded digital infrastructure, the USP project is a significant step towards enhancing the learning experience and preparing students for the demands of the modern workforce.
